A Guide to Canadian Student Visa

A GUIDE TO CANADIAN STUDENT VISA

As a student, if you are searching for a country to complete your higher studies with quality education & want to travel to different places within budget. So here we are to help you with the biggest decision of your life, to choose the right destination for your future.

Continue to read this blog to find out what is the process to obtain a Canadian student permit & how much time it can take to process a Student permit.

 Canadian Student Permit Requirements

The first requirement to apply for the student permit is to obtain an offer letter from DLI (Designated Learning Institution)

NOTE – What is a DESIGNATED LEARNING INSTITUTION?

A Designated Learning Institution is a University approved by the Canadian government to allow international students to apply for study permits at that particular university.

If you had decided on a university for your further studies that is not listed in the DLI list, then you won’t be able to obtain a study permit until you change your decision. It’s advised to apply for the university of your choice in Canada, 6 months prior before applying for a study permit.

Whenever you start to apply for a Canadian study permit through the Canadian government website make sure you have all the items mentioned below-

  • An offer/acceptance letter from DLI.
  • A Valid passport of yours.
  • 2 Passport-size photos ( with your name and date of birth mentioned at the back of your photo.
  • A valid debit or credit card which is internationally activated to pay the fees.
  • Proof of means of financial support to show that allowing you to Canada for higher studies won’t be a burden for them.
  • A letter of explanation explaining all the valid reasons to answer the statement, why you want to choose Canada for your higher studies & what will be your responsibilities being a Canadian student.
  • Biometrics may also be needed for Indian Applicants.

NOTE – HERE’S A LIST OF RESTRICTED THINGS YOU CAN’T DO WITH HAVING YOUR STUDY PERMIT

  • You just can’t drop out of your program & continue living in Canada.
  • You can’t live more than 3 months ( 90 days ) after completing your course, without applying for an extension. For example – You have pursued a master’s degree of 2 years in Canada, therefore you can stay in Canada for 2 years and 3 months, not more than that.
  • You can’t even work before your study begins, it’s mandatory to work on-campus or off-campus simultaneously with your studies.

CANADIAN STUDENT VISA PROCESS

  • STEP 1- Compile all of your documents, mentioned in the above para.
  • STEP 2- Try to read and understand the study permit application instruction guide for international students.
  • STEP 3- Register yourself on the official website of Canada i.e. IRCC ( Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada ) to verify your application.
  • STEP 4- Answer everything correctly and accurately on the form.
  • STEP 5 – Submit your biometrics as well.
  • STEP 6 – Once everything is done, now you can track your application on IRCC.

NOW THERE’S A POSSIBILITY EITHER YOUR VISA WILL BE ACCEPTED OR REJECTED

  • CONDITION 1 – If it’s accepted you will receive your visa or the letter of introduction to bring it with you when you are travelling to Canada.
  • CONDITION 2 – If it’s rejected this can be the reasons for it’s rejection
  • Student wasn’t able to show that he/she is having the sufficient fund to study and reside in Canada.
  • The student wasn’t able to show that his/her intentions are very clear to enter Canada is studies.
  • The Student wasn’t able to convince the officers that he/she will leave the country once the studies are complete.

 PRE-DEPARTURE GUIDE FOR CANADA

So let’s share some tips to guide you for ensuring a smooth arrival in Canada.

The first question is how early you can arrive in Canada before starting the program. There’s nothing mentioned in anything specific you can arrive a little early to settle yourself before you start studying.

When you arrive at the Canadian airport, the officers can ask you some questions and can check some of the details mentioned below such as

  • A valid travel document that is a Passport.
  • A Letter of Acceptance from your University.
  • A Letter of introduction which was verified by IRCC for study permit.
  • Be in good health & must have COVID-19 certificates.
  • Have no Criminal background.
  • You must be able to convince the officers that you came to Canada for your higher studies & you will be leaving the country after the completion of the course because you have ties with your country such as financial assets, home & family.
  • Have enough money to sustain yourself.
  • Valid Medical Results.

WHILE YOU STUDY

While you are a student in Canada, you should always keep your profile updated with the information & always be updated with all the guidelines provided by IRCC.

After completing the program if you want to stay longer, you need to apply for it on a prior basis not after completing the course because you need to leave the country when your program is completed according to the terms & conditions.

When we talk about updating your account, it means you should always update your contact information if it changes & even if you are enrolling in any other school. Before you change your school or program you must meet the requirements of IRCC such as

  • The school you applying to must be a Designated Learning Institution.
  • And while applying for it you must be actively studying in Canada.

NOTE – While studying if you decide to leave the country and return after some time, you have to make sure you return in the valid period of time of your study permit as well as you need to bring your new IME (Immigration Medical Exam) with you.
